What it's all about

Hi, I'm Andy and I've bought a Ural Cross Sidecar outfit...like this

uralcross1.jpg

Then I wanted to give it a run so I've chosen to go and see a statue....

chinggiskhan.jpg

The statue is of Ghengis Khan who ruled over the largest area of the World..EVER! Therefore he deserves a staue which befits his place in history.

To this end I've started this Forum so you can suggest what I might need to take and what problems/adventures/sights I might come across on my 12,000 mile return journey.

If you wish to comment then you will need to join this Forum. Click on the 'New Member' link in the top right-hand corner and you will soon be able to join in the discussions.

My webpage is HERE where there is a more full explanation of how I've lost all my marbles at the age of 58.

Best of luck to you Andy, im really envious!

My fiance and i are getting in to the sidecar scene together, saving up for an mx outfit at the moment. They are strange beasts to ride at first but great when you get the hang of it!

Will you be practicing on the green lanes first?

Hi Tom, Yes, Tim has already volunteered to be the monkey. I'll be taking it gently and I need to get a winch fitted before attempting Muchlarnick (JOKE)

I will follow your adventure with interest. It's just over 2 years before I can get away on my own trip (and I'm 2 years younger than you so that makes sense!) so in the meantime I have to make do with stories of other people living the dream. The very best of luck with your plans and the ride itself.

Hi W650 Grandad

You've got a bike I really like if you own a W650.

10/10 for this Andy, brit lost in sweden here. You are wonderfully mad and you have my utmost respect for making this trip. Good luck on your journey which i shall be following all the way. Expect a book at the end of it or at least a movie.

Andy I am in awe of this tremendous challenge & adventure. It simply knocks the socks off Ewan McGregor & Charlie boy's trek, after all look at the support behind their televised tours which I am sure puts the two very different challenges in perspective. I look forward to following your adventure & most importantly your safe return with some interesting stories to tell.

Kindest Regards
Roberto

That I have. Found it last May, 2000 bike with 3800m on the clock, for all practical purposes a new bike. I love it.

I see that Ural now have a solo. I could have been tempted, but not at £8.5k. Pity.

Hi Goulash and Roberto, many thanks for your input to my journey/adventure.

I don't know whether the journey will warrant a book let alone a movie but I will be keeping in touch on my website (www.joatmoa.com).

The bike has had yet more work done on it but I haven't had time to take photos but I'll get some done when I secure the toolbox.

W650 Grandad - The Ural Solo was dropped as it won't pass homologation. They used all the remaining stock to make the Retro Outfit!

F2 are advertising the Ural ST (Solo Tourist) right now, they put it through MSVA. Its an attractive bike as a sort of 'blank canvas', but the price is way too high.

I'm sure some of the regular bike magazines would be interested in a nice long article or two about your trip, wish i could help you out there but i know i'd read it.

Spent plenty of time touring all over the place myself over the years, all over europe, morocco, thailand, all done by various bikes including BMW 1200GS for morocco & thailand, Honda VFR 750 and 800 for europe and my current steed, a new Triumph Tiger 800 which i bought from a dealer in the UK, and then rode 800 miles straight up to Sweden.

I remember growing up in eastern europe when i was a kid (Hungary), where i first discovered the joys of eastern bloc motorcycles, things like the Riga moped, early Jawa 250's with really 50's styling, old BMW R50's the police used, the Pannonia 350 i think it was, MZ Trophy 250's and countless others whose names elude me now. All good fun.

You must be getting excited now eh? Reckon the hardest part will be deciding what you don't want to take along, spares parts, waterproof matches,..doghnuts!....Have you set a date yet for the start of the Grand Adventure?

Hi Andy,
Saw your article in the MCN last week and finally got round to hunting down the video clip last night. I have been toying with the idea of a Ural X for a while - no chance of getting anything done about it at the moment but I think your plan is very very cool.

I'm looking forward to a vicarious adventure!

Good luck and all the best
Angus
